The meaning...

Each morning I wake up, I take a deep breath, and decide to get another day over with. Each day is a challenge, each day is wait. I am not sure what I am waiting for, but I am certain, that whatever the future holds, has got to be better than the present. Things have been progressively on the downward trend for a while, with hobbies dying an unnatural death, the amount of time to reflect upon oneself increasing significantly, debts and earnings going way out of sync, the want for all my vices disappearing and a lot more that I have missed out, accidentally or purposefully. There are days like today when every breath is a strained one and it's days like this  that makes me wonder, how long before I will be alive again. I, like many others before me have often wondered about the meaning of life, and it was while watching a movie, that I had an epiphany. May be one day I will be resurrected. Until then I'll be right here, tackling each day as it comes.

The Woman from Iran

I slept with the TV on last night, and got up to this morning to a very dreamy tune. The TV is still on, and VH1 still has soft music playing. I'd walked for over 4 hours yesterday. I don't know if it is the music, or the feeling of waking up rested from a deep sleep, or may be it is the thought of the woman from Iran, or some other unknown reason, but I have a feel good factor, despite the long tiresome day that lies ahead. And the way that the frequency of such a feeling is dwindling, I intend to make the most of it. So any how, it was a Friday evening, and me and a friend of mine were going over to a friends place, and we stopped to get some fuel. So this woman comes up and tries to ask the petrol pump attendants for help. Unfortunately, she could barely speak or understand English, let alone Hindi, while the attendants didn't understand a word of what she said. I helped her translate, and it turned out, her car (parked across the street) wouldn't start, and from her description it sounded as though her battery had run out of juice. The attendant asked her to leave her car at the pump and to come back for it, the following day, to which she turned to me and asked me if it was safe to leave her car there. I wanted to tell her that this was India and her car wasn't safe even if she slept in it, but instead I told her that if she spoke to the manager and he said it was safe, it should be safe. There was something peculiar about her deep blue eyes, which said that she was scared. It's kind of strange how we still communicate at a primal level. I sighed and told her I would help her start her car. Despite numerous attempts, I could not explain her the procedure to push start the car, and it took me a good 3-4 mins to explain her that the car should be in the third gear. She asked me to take the drivers seat, and I asked her teen aged son to help push the car. Luckily the slope was downhill and the battery had enough power for half a self. Soon the car was up and running. Both the woman and her son thanked me, and I left. I never help strangers, especially at night, and this was probably the first time I'd done so. Why I did it, I don't know, but the one thing that I do know is that helping the woman from Iran helped me feel good about my self as well. May be I ought to be more helpful to strangers. I have often thought about starting a "Pay it forward" program, but I don't have faith on the average Indian to keep the chain going. May be I haven't met someone so desperate, but if opportunity knocks, I'd like to give it a chance. I've also been considering giving away money to a good cause, for a while now. I'd like to take my father's advice on it, but I don't want him to know about it either. It's not that he isn't supportive, he has always supported me. When I do save some money, I am going to give away a menial amount, and when I do, no one will know, not even my lonely blog. I'd rather be just another anonymous entry in an NGO's ledger book.

How to make delicious chicken : Ginger Lemon Chicken

The other day I was really bored, so I decided to try my hand at cooking. Why cooking you may ask, well, I am kind of a foodie, and mostly my instincts about flavors that would go well are bang on. So anyway, it turned out to be really good, so I thought I'd put a post on cooking as well, here's how I went about it :

1. Collect the following ingredient :
  • Chicken - 500 gms
  • Lemons - 3-4
  • Ginger - One medium size piece, about 3/4th of the size shown in the image below
  • Garlic - 4-5 cloves
  • Rock Salt - To taste
  • White pepper - To taste
  • Green Chilly - 1-2
  • Olive oil - Enough to oil a pan
  • Herbs for seasoning (oregano, basil and parsley)
2. Wash and put the chicken in a container and stab it with a fork.
3. Grate or make a paste of the ginger, crush the garlic, squeeze the lemons, add rock salt and white pepper to taste, and deseed and add the green chilies and marinate for 6-12 hours.
4. Heat up a pan (preferably a grill pan) and grease it with a few teaspoons of olive oil.
5. Once the oil is warm enough, drain the marinade and add the chicken to the pan, put in some dried herbs of your choice.
6. Cook the chicken on a shallow flame, which is warm enough to keep the chicken sizzling, but not enough that the chicken gets burnt or cooks to quickly. Take at least 20 minutes cooking it turning it over and over again.
Voila... Making delicious chicken is as simple as that.

Shutdown -r

I am not someone who gives up easy, for I have had to fight for everything, but right now I am at a point where things have been rough for a long while, and I’m just plain tired. I am dissatisfied with everything, dissatisfied with life itself. How is it that you work hard to build something, and all of a sudden you get tired of it? I know I have been going on about change for a while now, but now it’s time. Wheels of change are in motion, and everything from this life must go, everything that makes me sad. I do not regret anything that I’ve done, for every incident, every scar teaches you something. I am just scared of what the future might hold. As a start, I’ve decided to lose the pot belly I’ve grown in the past few years, and have hence started pushing my body beyond what I thought it was capable of. I’ve grown fond of running. Nothing beats the feeling of having no thoughts at all, except the one about gulping down large volumes of air, and still being breathless. Sometimes I even get “runner’s high”. Fewer hours at work has been a side effect of this new addiction. There is a lot I have to set right. Recently, I read this blog post and really liked the analogy. I have realized that I have been concentrating so hard to get my pebbles in my jar, that I haven’t left much room for the rocks. It’s funny how it’s the rocks define you, yet the world judges you by your pebbles and sand. There were so may things I’d aimed at achieving, so many goals I’ve missed. I guess it’s time to reboot.

Scarred... For life?

When ever people interact, they inevitably scar each other. Now I don't mean actually physical scars (even though quite a few people have given me those as well :P ), but deeper metaphorical ones. The worst part is that there doesn't even have to be an exchange of words for people to affect you. Most times you are lucky, and the scars are only superficial, and soon disappear. Sometimes though, they last a lifetime. Moving on to actual physical scars (my inspiration for this post), each of em have a story to tell. Like this tiny black dot where I was stabbed with a pencil as a kid, or the scar near my lip where my sister hit me and I lied to my parents about it. Physical or metaphorical, I've got quite a few of them that appear that they would last me a lifetime. However, I think I'm ready to come out of my cocoon and be scarred again.

How to erase memories and forget stuff?

Bored and frustrated, trying to distract myself from my monotonous life, I went and bought myself a camera. Yes it's a DSLR. Having always enjoyed photography, but never having ha decent camera, I bought phones with cameras which were ahead of their times, and I even clicked some decent pictures with em. However, when I used a friends camera over a road trip that we made, I was in awe of the control one could have over light. It took me a while to justify the expense (and to pool in the money) but eventually, I ended up buying one too. It's amazing how quickly I got comfortable using it, and now am even planning to buy lenses, filters and other stuff for it. I got a feeling, that my camera is gonna be a bigger white elephant than my bike, especially since I didn't earn when I was passionate about bikes, limiting my expenses, but now there is nothing holding me back. Oh, and for those of you who see things from my perspective and wish to follow me, you can Google my real name, and my photo blog does show up in the lower half of the first page. I've even started a Flickr stream if you'd like to follow me there.

The andro post.

So where have I been all this while? Well, "lost" is the word that best explains it. I have been in a world of my own, cut off from everybody, waiting. I have been wondering for a while now, as to what I am gonna do next, but all I end up doing is waiting. But now that I am back, I do hope I post another one soon. One, in which I can put down a lot more, for this is all I can type on my tiny phone. With hopes of being back soon, with a longer post, I leave you with a picture of my latest (though not so new anymore) possession.

Living on the edge

I was watching this movie the other day (too lazy to Google it's name) which had this line which went like "There is only so much failure a man can take". Now this was one line that sent chills down my spine. Sometimes I wonder whether I am on the edge, or have I been pushed off the ledge. I sure hope it's the former. Each morning, I wait for the day to end; Each Monday, I wait for the week to end; Each 1st I wait for the month to end. I wait, promising myself a better tomorrow. I really don't know, what I expect out of life, all I know is that I need a change. Change is a funny thing you know, at least for me it is. I look forward to it, and when it time for the change, I have a tendency to resist it. But then again, isn't change a quintessential requirement of life?

I'm hanging by my fingertips, I can't see what's below.
If only I could see beneath me, I might just let go.

Me against myself.

As is customary for bloggers, I thought I'd go with the new year post as well, and to do so, I decided to bring back the how-goes-life graph I'd used a couple of years ago. But we will get to the graph later. So anyway, this year was in a way good, but over all not as satisfying, as I'd hoped it would be. Of course, I've changed a lot over this past year, more for the better than for the worse, but I don't like the new me. It's been a year filled with self-control, injected with spurts of momentary madness, but I have calmed down a lot, I believe this is what they call getting mature. Though I have alienated myself from quite a few people, and am lonely all of a sudden, but I also discovered, that I loved travelling alone. I believe I've made good progress at work this year, though I am bit unsure whether I have been able to do the same with respect to my career. It's been a year filled with mixed emotions. I realized, how much I loved to spend, and with it, I also experienced how insecure it felt to be broke. I barely watched any movies this past year, and also, barely listened to any music, and thus my year was kinda bland. This was a year I wondered a lot about my future, though I never decided on doing anything for it. May be that was a decision in itself. A lotta things started making sense this past year, and an equal amount, if not more, felt amiss. Let bygones be bygones, all that matters is that I survived. I hope I can untangle my life a bit in the year 2011. As for the how-goes-life graph, here it is...
Oh, and as for my resolutions for this year, I intend to lead a healthier lifestyle (better diet, and a bit of exercising) and to drive/ride slower.

The day full of 'almost's.

The end of the year is almost here, and ironically, today was filled with 'almost's. Well, to start with, I almost got up time today. And when I did get up, I almost went for a morning walk, almost keeping true to my to-be new-year resolution. Following that, I almost ditched my parents, who wanted to take me to this place I didn't want to go to. Next I almost ran over a kid, which was the one thing I don't regret, was only an almost. Then in the afternoon, I almost took a nap, and almost ignored my bike's maintenance, coz of which I have almost no fingerprints on one of my index fingers. Then I almost got Tres a key-chain that read her name. I almost went to meet a friend who was too lazy to come meet me, and I almost ditched the one who wasn't. Also, like many of my other ones, I almost did not publish this post. It's a funny thing you know, I didn't do any of the things I wanted to do, yet I wouldn't call today a bad day. On the contrary, I'd say it was a rather decent day. I guess, as long as I keep doing something or the other, I'm satisfied.

To be or not to be

Hmmm, so I get up this morning, and surprisingly I still remember the dream I had had. Of all the things in the world, it was about this blog of mine. I dreamt about how awful my rhymes were and was embarrassed, when I was linked to this blog. Now it's not that many people follow me here, but I think there are a coupla kooks who silently follow my blog post's titles :P The reason I blog, is to let off some steam, and deleting the blog is not an option, at least not at the moment. However, I could stop rhyming in public, at least for a while. I wonder if I should add 'will not rhyme' to my new year resolution list. Oh yeah, I've already started with it. Numero uno on the list is to lead a healthier life style, followed closely by being slower on the road. Although I've been trying to get a head-start on the first one and I haven't been successful at it, things have been brighter with the second to-be-resolution. I've certainly become a more mature driver, interrupted by spurts of rash maneuvers. I'm disappointed by the fact that Blur's Song 2, still makes my revs go up. But I still have hope for my self. The end of the year is almost here, I have high hopes for the coming year. Filled with uncertainties, it is definitely going to be an exciting one. Anyway, there is still a little time left before the year ends, but not much for the day to end. I must retire now. Gotta at least try to get up early tomorrow, and may be, just may be, I might even flex a few muscles, ie, if I manage to get up on time without setting an alarm :P

All funked up

There was this kid, back in school, who eventually became one of my best friends by the time we passed out. Sadly though, after school, I kind of lost touch with most of my friends. After all, we didn't have cell phones back then, nor had emails and social networking sites caught up by then. A year after I joined college, I heard that that this friend of mine (Henceforth referred to as Scully) had fallen ill. I got in touch with him and spoke to him a couple of times, in the following year. Then a year later, roaming on the street, I ran into another friend from school and he took me meet Scully. Scully was weak, unlike the person I had known, who was athletic and energetic. I was really disturbed. Years passed by, and we didn't speak. I wasn't that I didn't care, it was just that I, like an ostrich, just wanted to bury my head in the ground. I did care about him and kept tabs on him though. It was always awkward conversing with him, and I avoided doing so. So anyway, I am headed to the town he is in, and recently contacted him again. I heard he wasn't doing so well, and for some reason, tears started pouring from my eyes. I really don't remember when the last time was when I cried, but I don't think I've had my eyes water this way in over a decade and a half. I sobbed myself to sleep and got up with puffy eyes. I am still wondering what had happened. Was it the kid in me who started crying? Were there other emotions which were triggered like an avalanche by this conversation. I've always wished Scully the best, and thought of him occasionally. I had always imagined Scully getting better, but that was never the case. I had often considered calling him, but never did get to it. Even my mother had noticed this reluctance to call Scully, and had asked me to get my head out of the ground. I wonder sometimes, if I was a good friend, not having bothered to check up on an ill friend. I really don't know what to say. Though I would be lying if I told you Scully had nothing to do with this upcoming trip of mine. I really really wanted to meet him, and now I am reluctant again.

Here we go again.

The sun is out, there are these beautiful white clouds floating in the sky, and I am sitting here staring out my window; what a day to be gloomy. I'm still listening to "When they come for me", just that, now it is the only song in my playlist. The temperature around my place at work is fairly comfortable, a tad bellow shivering point; just the way I like it. Today I made changes to the only remaining project in my team, that I hadn't yet touched, yet I'm not happy. Someone at work, once asked me to be a little less polite, and I took his advice. I don't like this arrogant self of mine. There is a lot that is amiss, and I have no doubts that things would work themselves out soon. However, soon after I got up this morning, I was hit by something. Not something, but more of a lack of it. I see dark clouds looming ahead, at least for the next three months, if not more. Hoping to make it through dry. :( Anyway, I leave you with a latest addition to my incomplete Lines O' Rhymes document :

Some days I wake up and ask why.
I really wonder if life is a lie.
To get what you want, you work hard for.
And once you have it, you don't want it no more.
Needs change, wants change.
In a lifetime your requirements exhibit a whole lotta range.
I wonder why I can't think ahead.
I wonder why my mind can't be read.
Some days I wake up in a lot of pain.
Some days I wake up and think, "Here we go again"

Start trying to catch up M***** F*****

Going crazy listening to this song "When they come for me" by Linkin Park. I just love it when my rear view mirror vibrates to the beat of this song. There is something about this song that really appeals to me; it may be the beat, or may be the prompt to catch up in the lyrics, but each time I play this song, I can notice a change in my driving style. It's been a while since I have been hearing these words in my head, long before this song even came out, and each time it played in my head, I felt motivated. Ironically, I'd only recently stopped hearing these words, and thought I had finally caught up to the shadow I was chasing. Things had started to settle down, but along came this song and stirred things up. Pumped up again, I am ready to go. Funny how decisions are taken with so much ease when you are are all pumped up and raring to go. I am still as confused and unsure as I ever was, but I will still go ahead with the impulsive decision I have taken, like I always do. *Fingers crossed*

I quit!!!

I am not a quitter, that's not how I was brought up. I have my numerous failures to prove that I'm not a quitter, but now I believe the time has come for me to quit. Wait before I begin, I can think of the one thing I did quit, but quitting it was actually me not quitting on myself. I am talking about cigarettes. Still stare at them sometimes, it even inspired a nice rhyme a while back. But I am here to discuss a different topic today. I am here because I had started giving too much time of my life to my work, and frankly, I do not see myself gain much from it. Sure people at work look up to me, and I do get the feeling sometimes that I have made up for most of my lost year, but something is still missing. It was during my week of illness that I realized how obsessed I was with my work. In fact, I have nothing to speak with anyone other than my work. It was then that I decided it was time to dial it down a few notches. So this week I worked on my own terms (my boss not being available helped me do so) came home on time, and have read 3 books this week (started a 4th one). For some reason, I still am not satisfied. There is so much more to life than work, yet I can't get work out of my head. I realized that I have alienated almost everybody, except those who work with me. I wonder what I should do now. I wish I knew what I wanted. I wonder if I will be able to get rid of the anxiety in the pit of my stomach. I wonder if anyone has died of uncertainty. I wonder if i should quit working hard, or quit altogether. Or may be just take a vacation, come back, and continue with the way things are going; after all, I am no quitter.

When life gives you sour grapes, smile.

Of lately I've realized that I have this strange kinda paranoia. In fact I am not even sure that I would be called paranoid, but I really don't have a word for it. It's like seasons, just like summers after winters, and winters after summers, it's something that's just bound to happen. Strangely though, with me it's become like you can't enjoy the ice-creams in summer worrying about the winters. Oh and I'm talking about the ups and downs of life. Each time I'm on a high, I worry about my next low, and wonder how steep a fall it'd be. I really do need to take the phrase "enjoy it while it lasts" seriously. Well, at the moment, life's uncertainties are really killing me, a million things on my mind, and really stressful days at work. Boy i need a life. So any way, there was this study they were talking about on TV, which said that smiling actually alters your mood, no matter how terrible you are feeling, and guess what, so far it does work, try it out.

In the dark

I was watching The Lookout the other day, and it had this scene where this guy, Chris Pratt (this was the character's name, donno the actor's name) switches off the headlights of his car, as he encounters this swarm of fireflies. It's scary, you know, switching off your lights while riding/driving, not to mention disorienting, if it's pitch dark (yes, I have tried it out). So the other day it was pouring like hell, when I left for home, with raindrops the size of golf balls. It was like a scene from a bad movie where buckets and buckets of water are hurled at the actors. The situation was so bad that even cars had stopped on the sides of the roads, waiting for the down pour to stop. With the hazard lights blinking all through the way, it was really a relief to make it back home, safely. Of course I was listening to the (not exactly soothing) words of James Hetfield singing Unforgiven III all through the way. I have gone crazy listening to that song over and over again. I have played it on my way to and from work for atleast 5 days now. Work has been pretty hectic too of lately, and I honestly believe I don't have a life anymore, coz all i do is work or sleep. The last movie I watched (in a movie hall) was <*2-4 mins of thinking*> How to train a dragon iirc. I try to look a couple of years ahead in life, and all I see is darkness. It really is scary not knowing where you are headed. I wish I had more powerful headlights to look ahead in life. Coming back to headlights, I am wondering if I should put in those Xenon headlights in my bike. I recently put in a performance air filter in my bike and it has done wonders. I was getting in the mood to modify my bike, but sadly the rains ruined my plans. Also I think I'm a bit like JD from Scrubs sometimes, especially when I need to distract myself from stuff that disturbs me. My bike is one of those things thinking about which helps me do so. Anyway, I could go on and on about pointless stuff, not that there is anything wrong about it, but I need to sleep now. I have this wonderful flavour of nostalgia in my mouth I must get rid of before I sleep. Recently they started selling ice lollies from Mother Dairy here, and I am amazed that they still cost 5 bucks a stick. Anyway, now that I have started blogging again, hope to be back soon.

Be Positive

The other day, I was teaching science to my cousin, for her upcoming exam, where she got confused over a diagram explaining charging using induction. You can have a look at the diagram for those who don't remember a thing. So anyway her text-book had a similar diagram in it, with the following diagram with the side having an induced positive charge grounded. The diagram however showed that there was a negative charge flowing through the wire connecting the side with the positive charge to the earth, and this really got my cousin confused. Where did that negative charge come from? she asked me, pointing at the wire. That's when this really profound thought struck me. No I know I am not going to be able to do it justice by the words I put it in, but bear with me. You see, it isn't the excess of positive charge that makes something positively charged, it is the lack of negative charge (electrons) that makes it positive. Now think about it with respect to optimism and pessimism. Pessimism has never done anyone any good (at least that's what they say) and on the other hand, optimism overrated (to an extent). I know most people would find it hard to digest, but optimism is a self destructive concept. I mean, what if a sanguine person keeps failing in life? How long can he keep at it? That is where the concept of being positive (not to be confused with being optimistic) comes in. When I say be positive, I mean it with reference to the electrostatic theory, ie, to be positive, you don't really have to be positive, but merely stay clear of negativity. Thus being positive is a state that can be persisted, despite the numerous failures in life one may have to face, in other words, a win-win situation, I'd say. Also, I learnt quite recently, that my blood group is probably B+, my mum didn't seem that sure about it when I asked her, but till the time I don't get a test done, I think I'll accept B+ as my blood group, especially since it goes well with my be positive theory :)

I Hate

Here is a list of all the things I hate that I can think of right now. I hate...
  • getting wet in the rain.
  • eating too much and falling ill.
  • eating too little and falling ill.
  • getting up early just 'cause I left a crack in the curtains.
  • getting a hair cut.
  • catching a cold.
  • people trying to race me when I ride the way I love to ride.
  • not being able to sleep more than 8 hours a day.
  • losing entire days sleeping.
  • it when all the movies on TV are ones that I have seen.
  • fungus that grows on your clothes during the rain.
  • stepping into puddles right after polishing your shoes.
